The 400th Anniversary of Québec

Did you know…

. . .in 2008 Québec will celebrate 400 years of history on American soil.  For this special event Québec City is presenting a multitude of shows and extravaganzas all year long. This great walled city of 500,000 inhabitants is inviting over 3 million people and is dressing up for the world!

In order to include some of these exciting events, we are offering special tours to Québec along with the normal complimentary French lessons! Come and celebrate with us the 400th Anniversary of Québec!

The celebrations will begin with opening ceremonies in December 2007 and will culminate in October 2008 with a spectacular closing event at Bassin Louise in the Old Port of Québec. This official site of the festivities will be a central meeting place, and visitors from every walk of life are warmly invited there to experience what can only be described as the biggest party imaginable in 2008.

Of course, all of the charming events and activities that are always part of Québec will be going on as well.

For 2008 only, you can experience extraordinary events, including:

¨        Entertainment in the Grand Square and a wide range of daily activities and shows created especially for this unique historic celebration.

¨        The exhibition of an unprecedented loan of more than 270 works from the famed Musée du Louvre to the Musée des Beaux-arts du Québec (with cultural and educational activities, including a Louvre-designed hands-on gallery with 25 antiquity-inspired castings for the visually impaired).

¨        Women's Imprints, thematic cocktail parties hosted by well-known women that highlight the contributions of women and future development of Québec City. Through October 1.

¨        The amazing Installation Dragone, in which designer/artist/producer Franco Dragone transforms the exterior of the Musée de la Civilisation, starting in May and finishing on October 31.

¨        Roving shows that take place throughout the year downtown and in the surroundings:

  • Traveling with Samuel de Champlain from France to the New World. Theatre and music;

  • Troupe V'là l'Bon Vent. Interactive show that tells Québec City's history through songs, dances, poem and entertaining anecdotes.

  • Onze joyaux en fete. Features roaming historic figures, street theatre, audience participation in painting graffiti and murals and special thematic events based on water, beer and fire. Through September 30.

¨        Gold in the Americas, an exhibition in which some 250 objects (masks, jewels, sculptures and paintings) bear witness to the the historic urges for gold.

¨        Same Cloth, Different Threads: the Jews of Québec, an exhibition along with concerts, tours and other cultural activities.

¨        Québec Forever Bound, as international bookbinding competition and exhibition of works dedicated to Québec City, with three grand prizes awarded.

 

Depending on availability, tour and group size, you can also enjoy:

¨       A dinner cruise on the St. Lawrence before attending the Loto-Québec International Fireworks Competition by the Falls of Montmorency.

¨        The most ambitious projection ever produced in the world, a multimedia extravaganza projected on a 2,000-foot wide screen tracing four centuries of Québec history at Espace 400e.

¨        Landscape of the Soul: 400 Points of View of Québec City, a fabulous mosaic of 400 miniature prints by 400 different artists from around the world.

¨        A contemporary dance show, Following the Stream, presented outdoors at Musée de la Civilisation, Place-Royale and Old Québec, celebrating those locations in the history of Québec.

¨        Over 80 hot air balloons on both sides of the St. Lawrence River, taking off morning and evening simultaneously.

¨        Cirque du Soleil in a specially-produced show for the closing ceremonies of the 400th anniversary celebration.

¨        And, much, much more!
