Pianist Ellis Marsalis & Vocalist Karrin Allyson Headline ‘Jazz for the Gulf’ Benefit Concert

NEW ORLEANS – Jazz Musicians from New York and New Orleans team up to show their support of the people of the Gulf of Mexico in response to BP’s recent oil spew, which has proven catastrophic to fishing industries and environmentally sensitive areas in the region.

"Jazz for the Gulf" will take place on Saturday, July 31 from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. at One Eyed Jacks (615 Toulouse Street at Chartres in the French Quarter). A donation of $25 will be collected at the door. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.

The concert will showcase locals Ellis Marsalis, Charmaine Neville, Cindy Scott, Leah Chase, Holley Bendtsen (Pfister Sisters) and many others. Also on the billing is jazz vocalist and three-time Grammy nominee Karrin Allyson, who has been a staple on Concord Records for years and has released twelve CDs on the label.

All the performers have agreed to forego payment for "Jazz for the Gulf," which will benefit the Gulf Relief Foundation (www.gulfaid.org). The foundation focuses on two key elements of recovery - the wetlands/coastal environmental issues, and the well-being of the regional seafood and commercial fishing industries.

The idea for the benefit hatched during a dinner conversation between friends Karrin Allyson and Cindy Scott shortly after the BP Horizon well exploded and began gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico. One month later, with oil still pouring into the Gulf and beginning to land on beaches and wetlands, Karrin called Cindy from her New York home and said, “I really want to do something. I can’t sit and watch this anymore. If I can get down there, do you think you could put a show together?”

It just so happened that Scott was already slated to appear at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art for their “After Hours” series on July 29. NONY, a band Scott regularly performs with in the New York area, was making a special trip to New Orleans to play the gig. She called her band mates guitarist Brian Seeger (who splits time between New Orleans and New York), bassist Dan Loomis and drummer Jared Schonig and asked them if would donate their services to “Jazz for the Gulf.” With no hesitation, they all said yes.

With an excellent backing group in place, Scott began making phone calls and managed to round up an impressive list of local artists to join Allyson on the billing including Ellis Marsalis, Charmaine Neville, Leah Chase, James Westfall & the Wee Trio, Amasa Miller, and Holley Bendtsen, and this list is sure to grow. To make the evening even more special, WWNO DJ and New Orleans personality Jack Hopke will serve as master of ceremonies.

“Everyone I called was willing to help. Some were on tour or had other gigs, but the support I got was fantastic. This is a cause which really moves people. We need to feel like we can do something to counteract the damage this disaster has caused to our region. This is a great way for people to make a difference. What’s not to like about having a great time listening to great music for a great cause?

One Eyed Jacks is located at 615 Toulouse Street at Chartres in the French Quarter, and the Concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. Doors open at 7:00.
